Five Fundamental Positions of Arms and Feet
- 1st Position: Arms raised forward, fingertips close together at chest height. Feet close together, toes angled out, approximately 45˚.
- 2nd Position: Arms raised sideward & curved at shoulder level. Feet apart, about one pace.
- 3rd Position: One arm raised sideward, and the other raised upward. Heel of one foot near the instep of the other.
- 4th Position: One arm raised forward, the other overhead. One foot in front of the other, about one pace apart..
- 5th Position: Both arms raised overhead. Heel of front foot close to big toe of back foot.
Common Dance Terms
- Arms in lateral position: Arms at one side (left or right), at shoulder, chest, or waist height.
- Brush: Weight on one foot, hitting the floor (ball or heel) with the other and lifting it.
- Crossed arms: Partners facing each other, or side-by-side, left hands together, and right hands together.
- Cut: Quickly placing one foot in front to replace the other.
- Do-si-do: Partners advance forward, pass one another (right/left sides), and step across.
- Hayon-hayon: Place one forearm in front, the other at the waist.
- Hop: A spring from one foot landing on the same foot.
Additional Dance Terms
- Jaleo: Partners turn around (clockwise/counterclockwise), elbows are almost touching.
- Jump: Spring on one or both feet, landing on one or both feet.
- Kumintang: Hand movement from the wrist, either clockwise or counterclockwise.
- Leap: Springing from one foot, landing on the other.
- Place: Positioning a foot without weight.
- Pivot: Moving by turning with the foot or a part of the foot.
- Point: Touching the floor with the toes, with weight on the other foot.
- Panadyak: Stamping in front or alongside with the right foot, tapping the same foot close to the left foot.
- Patay: Bending the head down and supporting the forehead with an arm, Left foot pointing backwards and slight knee bending.
- Salok: Arm movement, downward-upward, almost scooping. Body slightly bent, following arm movement.
- Saludo: Partners bow to each other, audience, or neighbors, feet together.
- Sarok: Right foot in front of the left, bend slightly, hands in front of the right-hand, over the left-hand.
- Slide: Gliding the foot along the floor, with or without weight transfer.
- Stamp: Bringing the foot down forcefully.
- Tap: Lightly tapping with the ball/toe of the free foot.
- Whirl: Making fast turns, to right or left.
