FSC - Forest Stewardship Council
- FSC is an international, non-profit, and non-governmental organization
- Founded in 1993, promoting responsible forest management and traceability of derived products
- Present in Italy since 2002
FSC in Italy
- Established in 1996 at TESAF, University of Padua
- Defining national sustainable forest management standards (GFS)
FSC Certification Criteria
- Compliance with national laws
- Worker's rights and working conditions
- Indigenous peoples' rights
- Relationships with local communities
- Benefits generated by the forest
- Environmental values and impacts of forest management
- Forest management planning
- Monitoring and evaluation of management practices

- Practical implementation of management activities
FSC Certification Types
- Forest owners: Italian municipalities and national parks
- Processing companies: Necessary for labeling products with the FSC logo (Chain of Custody COC)
FSC Certification Process
- FSC defines the necessary standards for certification, but independent and accredited certification bodies (approximately 20 worldwide, mostly in Italy, Germany, and Austria) issue the certificates.
- After certification, companies must be periodically audited by accredited bodies.
- Certification validity is 5 years.
FSC Product Types
- FSC 100%: Contains only material from certified FSC forests
- FSC Mixed: Contains FSC certified materials (at least 70%) "controlled wood" and/or recycled post-consumer materials.
- FSC Recycled: Contains only recycled materials (at least 85% post-consumer materials - non-reusable materials).
FSC Logos and Codes
- FSC licenses have codes visible on labels and promotional materials, following the format FSC-C######
- Each certificate receives a unique code for each company.
Agenda 2030
- Adopted in 2015 by 193 UN member countries
- Based on five key concepts: people, prosperity, partnership, planet, and peace
- Focuses on 17 Sustainable Development Goals addressing economic, social, and environmental sustainability
- Aims to stop deforestation and degradation of forests
- Importance for limiting climate change, protecting biodiversity and water resources, providing raw materials for low-impact economies, and protecting livelihoods for millions.
FSC's Role in Agenda 2030
- FSC contributes mainly to SDG 15.2 (sustainable forest management) by promoting responsible forest management and traceability, helping maintain forests and ecosystems.
- The aim is to achieve, among other things, the preservation, restoration and sustainable use of land and terrestrial ecosystems.
Italian Forest Situation
- Approximately 77,985 hectares of Italian forests are FSC certified
- In Lombardy, 26% of the region's land is forested. Of this area, only 77,985 hectares are FSC certified.
- Italy boasts important FSC expansion and growth in recent years.
