Direction

  • Chief Executive Officer: The Co-Director of Public Safety (Officers) will be the Chief Executive Officer. The acting Chief of Police will have exclusive control of the police department, subject to safety board rules, and in emergencies, is subordinate to the city executive.
  • Governing Body: The Board of Public Safety governs the Fort Wayne Police Department.
  • Succession of Command: In cases of incapacitation or unavailability of the Chief of Police, command succession follows this order: Chief of Police, Asst./Chief of Police, Deputy Chief of Police, Uniform Division Deputy Chiefs, Investigative/Support Deputy Chief, and Vice and Narcotics Commander.

Information aiding criminal apprehension is encouraged across departments.

Records

  • The Records Section maintains cases, identification, and criminal history records, and the master index files.

Reports

  • Crime Analysis Unit Reports: The Chief will receive daily reports on significant occurrences from the Crime Analysis Unit, and monthly reports on activity during the previous month. The CAU also produces reports for daily, weekly, monthly, and annual crime analysis which also includes other related reports such as Intelligence Files and other reports needed by the Records section.
  • Monthly reports: Division and other unit reports are produced to encompass all division activities including but not limited to personnel and finances for a monthly report.
  • Annual reports: The Department will compile an annual report which outlines administrative reports required, the staff responsible for producing the reports, along with the purpose, frequency and distribution information for each report.

Other

  • Confidentiality: Weekly confidential reports are prepared for the Chief, Asst./Chief, and all Deputy Chiefs, detailing formal complaints received. Regular Monthly Reports will follow in the format of Administrative reports. In addition to weekly and monthly reports there are annual reports required that are similar in format required in the annual report for the department's Annual reports.
  • Affidavits for Probable Cause: The officers are required to complete and submit a properly executed and notarized Affidavit for Probable Cause when there is an arrest for an incarcerable offense.
  • Victim Assistance: The Fort Wayne Police Department maintains a Victim Assistance Office for referrals.
