Five Kingdom Classification
- Living organisms are classified into five kingdoms: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.
- This system is a more accurate classification than the previous two-kingdom system.
Defining Characteristics of Each Kingdom
-
Monera: Prokaryotic, unicellular organisms. Lack membrane-bound organelles. DNA or nucleoid in the cell, not within a membrane. Examples include bacteria and blue-green algae.
-
Protista: Eukaryotic, unicellular or multicellular organisms. Some are autotrophic (photosynthetic) and some heterotrophic (consuming other organisms.) Examples include amoeba, euglena, and paramecium. Also includes some multi-cellular photosynthetic organisms like Pandorina.
-
Fungi: Eukaryotic, multicellular saprophytes (feeding on decaying matter). Cell walls made of chitin. Achlorophyllous. Their bodies are composed of thread-like hyphae. Examples include yeast, mushrooms, and bread molds.
-
Plantae: Eukaryotic, multicellular, autotrophic organisms. Carry out photosynthesis. Possess cell walls made of cellulose. Examples include flowering plants, ferns, and mosses. Divided into further groups including Thallophytes (undifferentiated body), Bryophytes (simplest form of land plants—false root-like structures called rhizoids, stem like structures called caulids, and leaf like structures called phyllids. Examples: Moss and Liverwort), Pteridophytes (body differentiated into stem, leaves, and roots), Gymnosperms (naked seeded plants, seeds not enclosed in a fruit. These are non-flowering), and Angiosperms (flowering plants with seeds in fruit). Monocots (one seed leaf — example Rice) and dicots have two seed leaves — example beans.
-
Animalia: Eukaryotic, multicellular, heterotrophic organisms. Lack cell walls. Examples include humans, insects, and birds.
Additional Notes
- The five-kingdom classification is an internationally agreed upon system for classifying organisms.
- Organisms are categorized based on cell type (eukaryotic or prokaryotic), cell wall presence, body organization (unicellular or multicellular), and mode of nutrition (autotrophic or heterotrophic).
- There are characteristics describing specific groups within each kingdom (e.g., flowering plants, non-flowering plants like Thallophytes, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes).
