Assessing the Skills of A First Aider
- Key steps involve observing, listening, feeling, talking, touching, providing, and building trust.
DRABC Assessment
- DANGER: Ensure the scene is safe before approaching a casualty.
- RESPONSE: Check for responsiveness by asking questions and gently shaking the casualty’s shoulder.
- AIRWAY: Ensure the airway is open and clear of obstructions.
- BREATHING: Observe for chest rise and fall, and listen for breath sounds.
- CIRCULATION: Check for a pulse and signs of circulation, such as skin colour and temperature.
Types of Wounds
- Abrasion: Superficial wound with minimal bleeding.
- Laceration: Jagged, irregular cut caused by tearing.
