    Study Notes

    Giving CPR (Adults)

    • Press downward to depress the breastbone to a depth of at least 2 inches (5 cm) during chest compression, while avoiding excessive chest compression depths (greater than 2.4 inches, or 6 cm).
    • Release the pressure but do not remove your hands from the chest after compressing.

    Giving Rescue Breaths

    • Pinch the nose and tilt the chin before placing your mouth over the victim's mouth.
    • Give the victim two rescue breaths.

    CPR Cycles

    • Continue giving cycles of 30 chest compressions and two rescue breaths until help arrives.
    • Repeat the cycles until help arrives.

    CPR Guidelines

    • Check for signs of circulation.
    • If signs of circulation are present but there is no normal breathing, provide rescue breathing at:
      • 1 breath every 6 seconds (about 10 breaths per minute) for adults.
      • 1 breath every 2-3 seconds (20-30 breaths/minute) for children.
    • If no signs of circulation are present, begin the cycles of chest compressions.
