Study Notes

First Aid for Shock

  • Shock can occur in any accident, even seemingly minor ones, especially in children and babies.
  • Signs include pale face, rapid shallow breathing, feeling sick, shivering/cold but not sweating, and weakness/dizziness.
  • Treatment involves reassurance, comfort, placing the victim in a chair/laying them down with head tilted, loosening tight clothing, and covering with a blanket.
  • Ensure the cause of the shock is identified and treated if possible, give a warm drink (not alcohol or water) once recovery starts.

First Aid for Burns

  • Burns are a significant cause of home accidents and death.
  • Signs include redness, swelling, blistering, and shock (as above) – clothing may be in flames during a house fire.
  • Treatment involves removing the victim from the heat source.
  • If clothing is on fire, smother/extinguish by applying water or covering with a non-flammable material like a rug or blanket.
  • Do not immerse the burnt area, but cool under running water or immerse in cold water for 10 mins to help with pain. Remove any rings, jewellery etc, before swelling begins.
  • Cover the burn with sterile dressings to exclude air, not lotions/oils or touching blisters.
  • If serious, seek immediate medical advice or hospital transport.
