Abandon the Building
- Intended for immediate withdrawal of interior personnel to a safe area
- Failure to respond can result in serious injury or death
- Ordered when there is potential for:
- Building collapse
- Possible explosion
- Other hazardous conditions dictating a change from offensive interior attack to defensive exterior attack
- Imminent hazard that may result in serious injury or death to interior personnel, as determined by the Incident Commander or any other officer
Procedure for "Abandon the Building"
- Calling officer must use emergency traffic to signal, stating the hazard and location for a safe exit
- Incident Commander instructs Dispatch to announce "(Incident Name), Abandon the Building"
- The Dispatcher repeats this three times
- All Fire Department personnel with access to an apparatus sound their apparatus' air horn for a minimum of fifteen seconds
- Upon notification, interior crews will immediately:
- Evacuate to a safe area, abandoning non-essential tools and equipment
- Conduct a Personnel Accountability Report (PAR)/ Roll Call
- Report crew location and status to their immediate supervisor
Withdrawal from the Building
- "Withdraw" order signifies an organized rapid exit
- Upon receipt of an emergency traffic withdraw order, the company officer/team leader shall:
- Acknowledge the withdraw order
- Assemble their crew and promptly exit to a safe location, bringing only essential equipment that will not hinder a rapid exit
- Account for all crew members and notify command of PAR upon exit
