Fundamentals of Marksmanship
- The objective of the firearms block is to teach trainees proper weapon handling skills and tactics using handguns and shotguns.
- Minimum qualification course scores of 70.00% for both weapons are required to successfully complete this skill development area.
Firearms Safety
- The four critical safety rules are:
- Treat all firearms as if they are loaded.
- Point the muzzle in a safe direction or at the target.
- Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you are on target and/or ready to fire.
- Always be sure of your target and aware of what is beyond the target.
- Additional safety rules include:
- Never point a firearm at anyone unless you are ready and willing to use deadly force.
- Strict discipline must be maintained on the firearms range.
- Never give a firearm to anyone unless the cylinder or slide is open.
- Unload when and as instructed.
- Never draw a handgun with the trigger finger inside the trigger guard.
- No smoking, talking, or horseplay is allowed on the firing line.
- Never permit the muzzle of the firearm to touch the ground.
Malfunctions
- Types of malfunctions include:
- Hang fire: a delay in firing caused by slow powder ignition.
- Misfire: a failure to fire caused by a light blow or off-center firing pin strike.
- Squib fire: a misfire caused by reloaded ammunition without enough powder.
- Fail to feed: a malfunction on semi-automatic handguns where the top round in the magazine catches on the magazine or feeding ramp.
- Double feed: a malfunction on semi-automatic handguns where a round has failed to be extracted from the chamber and a second round is trying to be loaded.
