Purpose
- Guidelines for implementing a Fire Watch at the conclusion of fire suppression activities and during non-fire situations
- Addresses unsafe conditions of an occupancy that could potentially cause harm or damage to the occupancy or occupants.

- Applies to all Fire Rescue personnel.

Procedure
- Guidelines provide a basic framework for Fire Watch determination.
Working Fire Situations
- Structure Fires: Following all fire operation activities, immediate Fire Watch is needed by the property owner or representative if:
- There is potential for re-kindle, the structure is unsafe, suppression and/or notification systems are non-functioning, and the structure remains habitable
- The Incident Commander or Fire Investigator will inform the property owner or representative of the need
- Wildland Fires: Following all fire operation activities, if the potential for re-kindle exists, the Incident Commander will establish a Fire Watch to locate and extinguish any potential re-kindle or “hot spots”
- The fire watch unit shall remain available according to Radio Communications (PPM FR-O-201) unless conditions require a commitment of resources
- Record all conditions noted and actions taken on the fire watch according to PPM FR-M-201, Incident Reporting.
Non-Fire Situations
- Fire notification or fire suppression system activation that cannot be immediately restored to normal operational status: the property owner or representative shall be required to establish an immediate Fire Watch.
- Fire suppression system notification or discovery not being 100% operational: the property owner or representative shall be required to establish an immediate Fire Watch.
- Fire notification system notification or discovery not being 100% operational, to include no trouble or alarm signals at the notification panel: the property owner or representative shall be required to establish an immediate Fire Watch.
- The Fire Marshal shall be immediately notified should an occupancy present an immediate threat to safety and well-being or potential catastrophic damage, regardless of type.
- The Fire Marshal will determine actions to mitigate the dangers presented to include establishing a Fire Watch.
Specific Actions
- For non-wildland fire related Fire Watch situations, provide the attached documents to the property owner or responsible party
- Immediately after establishing a Fire Watch, notify the Fire Marshal's office via the email address [email protected].
