Study Notes

  • Purpose: To outline guidelines for fire watches, both after structure and wildland fires and in non-fire situations with unsafe conditions.

  • Attachments: Customer Fire Watch Requirements (Attachment A) and Customer Fire Watch Log (Attachment B).

Fire Watch Procedures

  • Working Fire Situations:

    • Structure Fires: If re-kindle is possible, structure is unsafe, or suppression/notification systems are non-functional, but the structure is habitable, the Incident Commander/Investigator informs the owner/representative of the immediate need for a Fire Watch.
    • Wildland Fires: If re-kindle is possible after fire operations, the Incident Commander establishes a Fire Watch to locate and extinguish any re-kindles (hot spots). The watch remains active until conditions allow, following radio communications protocols. Record all activity and conditions.
  • Non-Fire Situations:

    • System Malfunction: If a fire notification or suppression system malfunctions (non-operational), the property owner/representative is required to immediately establish a fire watch. This applies if trouble/alarm signals are absent from the notification panel as well.

    • Immediate Threat: The Fire Marshal must be immediately notified if any occupancy poses a safety threat or risk of major structural damage in the county's jurisdiction—the Fire Marshal will then decide on actions, including establishing a Fire Watch.

  • Specific Non-Wildland Fire Watch Actions: Provide owner/responsible party with attached documents detailing Fire Watch responsibilities, and immediately notify the Fire Marshal's office via [email protected] after initiating the watch.
