Palm Beach County Fire Rescue - Standard Operating Guideline (SOG 100-03) - Fire Alarms

Purpose: Establish procedures for responding to fire alarms.

Authority: Fire Rescue Administrator

Scope: Applies to all Emergency Operations personnel.

Procedure for Response:
- Code 1 Response: Upon dispatch for an automatic fire alarm, units respond code 1.
- Code 3 Discretion: Company Officers can use discretion to respond code 3, based on updated information from the Communications Center.
- Monitoring Company Notification: If the Communications Center is notified by a monitoring company of a false alarm, all responding units should cancel.
- No Emergency Notification: If the Communications Center is notified by a business or homeowner that there is no emergency, responding units continue code 1 verification.

Arrival Procedure:
- Arrival Report: Provide an arrival report per SOG 210-01.
- Building Inspection: Conduct a building inspection for fire, smoke, or water flow issues.
- Access: Gain building access where possible but forcibly-enter if needed and indicators suggest an actual fire.
- Alarm System Check: Locate and check alarm annunciator panel, pull stations, and smoke detectors for activation.
- Fire Condition Check: Thoroughly search the building to determine fire conditions.
- Alarm System Deactivation: Do not reset a fire alarm system.
Water Flow Alarms Response
- Response Code 3: Respond code 3 to reported water flow alarms.
- Initial Evaluation: Conduct a 360 degree size up and check pressure gauges for water flow.
- Gaining Access: Gain access to interior of the building if water flow is confirmed to investigate the alarm cause.
- Building Access: All buildings must maintain building access keys in a Knox Box.

Report and Communication: Notify Building Representative or Communication Center of the situation, or silence alarm with notification to Communications Center.
- Notifications to monitoring company is to be made if no representative is available.
