- Magellan proposed a westward route around the Americas to reach the Spice Islands, which Spain funded.
- In 1519, he set sail with five ships and around 270 men, sailing across the Atlantic, around South America.
- He discovered the Strait of Magellan (formerly known as All Saints' Channel), a passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

- Only three ships remained after his passage through the Strait of Magellan.
- The three ships took several months to cross the Pacific, much longer than Magellan anticipated.
- His crew suffered from starvation, eating rats and sawdust.
- Conflict with tribes in the Philippines led to Magellan's death.
- Only one ship returned to Spain, with less than 20 sailors, after three years at sea. Having traveled over 40,000 miles (that is more that twice the distance around the equator).
