Female Reproductive System Overview
- The female reproductive system consists of internal and external structures responsible for reproduction and sexual function.
Ovaries
- Paired organs that produce mature ova (eggs) and hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.
Mesovarium
- A peritoneal fold that connects the ovaries to the broad ligament, providing support.
Fallopian Tubes
- Tubes extending from the ovaries to the uterus, facilitating the transport of eggs and sperm; fertilization typically occurs here.
Fimbriae
- Finger-like projections located at the end of the fallopian tubes that help guide the ovulated egg into the tube.
Infundibulum of Fallopian Tube
- The funnel-shaped opening of the fallopian tube, situated closest to the ovary, aiding in the collection of the ovum.
Uterus
- A muscular organ where a fertilized egg implants and develops during pregnancy; has three layers: endometrium, myometrium, and perimetrium.
Endometrium
- The inner lining of the uterus, which thickens during the menstrual cycle in preparation for a potential pregnancy.
Myometrium
- The middle muscular layer of the uterus, responsible for contractions during childbirth and menstrual cycles.
Fundus
- The upper dome-shaped part of the uterus, opposite to the cervix, where implantation can occur.
Cervix
- The narrow, lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina, serving as a passageway for menstrual fluid, sperm, and a fetus.
External Os
- The opening of the cervix into the vagina, which changes in size during different life stages, such as menstruation and childbirth.
Vagina
- The muscular canal extending from the cervix to the exterior of the body, serving as a conduit for menstrual fluid, intercourse, and childbirth.
Birth Canal
- The passage through which a baby is born, consisting of the cervix and vagina.
Fornices
- Recesses formed around the cervix where the vagina meets the cervix, containing anterior and posterior fornices.
Hymen
- A thin membrane that partially covers the vaginal opening in some females, often associated with virginity or first intercourse.
Labia Majora
- The outer folds of skin surrounding the vaginal opening that protect the internal structures.
Labia Minora
- The inner folds of skin located within the labia majora; they protect the vaginal and urethral openings.
Mons Pubis
- The fatty tissue over the pubic bone that becomes covered with pubic hair during puberty.
Clitoris
- A small, sensitive organ located at the top of the vulva, primarily responsible for sexual arousal.
Vestibule
- The area between the labia minora that contains the openings to the vagina and urethra.
Vestibular Bulbs
- Erectile tissue located alongside the vaginal opening that contributes to sexual arousal and pleasure.
Vestibular or Bartholin's Glands
- Glands located at the vaginal opening that secrete fluid for lubrication during sexual activity.
Urinary Bladder
- A muscular sac that stores urine; situated in front of the uterus.
Urethra
- The tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body, also plays a role in sexual activity in females.
