Study Notes
Corneal Layers
- The main component of Bowman's membrane is a thin, acellular layer composed of type I and VII collagen fibrils.
Corneal Epithelium
- The basal layer of the corneal epithelium is made up of cuboidal or columnar cells.
- The intermediate layer of the corneal epithelium is primarily involved in cell migration and differentiation.
- The superficial layer of the corneal epithelium, which retains the tear film over the surface of the cornea, is composed of flat, squamous cells.
Corneal Stroma (Substantia Propria)
- The main bulk of the cornea is composed of the stroma, which is made up of approximately 78% water, 15% collagen, and 5% proteoglycans.
Ocular Anatomy
- The outermost layer of the eye consists of the cornea and sclera.
Bowman's Membrane
- Bowman's membrane serves as a barrier to prevent the spread of infections and inflammation.
- If Descemet's membrane is destroyed, it can lead to corneal edema and vision disturbances.
Corneal Epithelial Regeneration
- The basal layer of the corneal epithelium has a high regenerative capacity, allowing it to quickly replace damaged or dying cells.
