Blood Vessels and Measuring Blood Pressure
- Common Iliac Vein: One of the major veins draining lower limbs, it branches into external and internal iliac veins.
- External Iliac Vein: Responsible for draining the lower extremity; it continues as the femoral vein.
- Femoral Vein: Transports blood from the thigh back to the heart, connecting with the external iliac vein.
- Great Saphenous Vein: The longest vein in the body, it drains the superficial tissues of the lower limb and empties into the femoral vein.
- Axillary Vein: Formed by the convergence of brachial and cephalic veins, it drains the upper limb into the subclavian vein.
- Brachial Vein: A major vein of the arm, runs alongside the brachial artery and contributes to the formation of the axillary vein.
- Cephalic Vein: A superficial vein in the arm that drains into the axillary vein, important for venipuncture.
- Basilic Vein: Runs along the inner side of the arm, draining blood from the hand and forearm, and joins the brachial vein.
Blood Pressure Measurement
- Systolic Pressure Indicator: Identified by the needle's movement on the gauge combined with the tapping sounds during measurement.
- Stethoscope: The primary device used in blood pressure measurement to listen for arterial sounds.
- Measurement Unit: Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).
Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)
- Recommended Blood Vessels: Dorsalis pedis or posterior tibial artery for calculating ABI, evaluates peripheral artery disease.
Blood Pressure Readings
- Hypertension Stage 1: >140 mm Hg systolic or >90 mm Hg diastolic.
- Hypertensive Crisis: 180/>120 mm Hg indicates a need for immediate medical attention.
- Normal Range: 120-129 represents elevated blood pressure but not classified as hypertension.
