Evacuation Commands
- In a safe environment, shout "Out of my way!" and "Stand back, hold people back!" while assessing the exit.
- Hold onto the white handle, reassess, and lift it up to open the exit.
- Pull the manual inflation handle, reassess conditions outside, and give commands: "You lead people away, You two stay at the bottom, pull people off, send them away."
- Shout "Come this way," "Stay Low, Jump," and then "Look out the window, if it's safe open it!"
Special Slide Techniques
- For infants, leave the carrier in the seat and hold the child in your lap, facing forward.
- For non-English speaking customers and parents with multiple children, assign "buddies" to assist.
- For service animals/guide dogs, do not remove the harness, hold them in your lap.
- For customers with disabilities, assign "buddies" to assist, use the sit and scoot method, and move them by their shoulders.
- Non-ambulatory customers and their attendants should evacuate after the main flow of traffic.
Emergency Equipment Retrieval
- On the A321, emergency equipment is located at positions A, B, C, D, and E.
- Each position has a flashlight, first aid kit, and other equipment such as megaphones, life rafts, and ELT.
Duties After Evacuation
- Perform a customer count and administer first aid as needed.
- Identify people to assist and give everyone an assignment.
- Re-enter the aircraft when it is safe to do so, after the engines have cooled and fuel has evaporated.
Survival After Evacuation
- 80% of all emergencies are unplanned, and most occur during taxi, takeoff, and landing.
- 71% of fatalities and 64% of severe injuries occur after the aircraft has come to a stop.
- Less than 14% of all accidents result in fatalities.
Unplanned Emergencies
- Start shouting commands when the pilot calls out "Brace, Brace, Brace" or "Evacuate, Evacuate".
- Stop shouting commands when the situation is under control.
Overwing Slide Exits
- Overwing exits are a last resort in a water ditching, as the slides are not detachable and cannot be used as a raft.
Failure to Automatically Deploy
- Slides may not automatically inflate if the aircraft does not drop to a 45-degree angle.
- The remedy is to pull the manual inflation handle.
Ditching Emergency Checklist
- For the A320, follow the ditching emergency checklist, which includes setting lights to bright, reading the ditching announcement, and distributing infant life vests.
