Study Notes

  • Ethernet is the most widely used networking technology, used for connecting devices and organizations.
  • There are different types of Ethernet connections, including baseband and broadband. Baseband technology uses a single frequency for transmission across a medium, while broadband uses multiple frequencies.
  • Older Ethernet standards, such as 10BASE-T (10-megabit Ethernet), used baseband technology and required Category 3 cable. This standard had a maximum distance of 100 meters.
  • Faster Ethernet standards, such as 100BASE-TX (100-megabit Ethernet), used all four pairs of wires within a cable and required Category 5 cable. This standard had a maximum distance of 100 meters.
  • Gigabit Ethernet, 1000BASE-T (gigabit Ethernet over Category 5 cabling), used all four pairs of wires and required a higher frequency for communication. It had a maximum distance of 100 meters, and required Category 5e cable.
  • 10GBASE-T (10 gigabit Ethernet over copper) uses all four pairs of wires and requires a minimum of Category 6 cabling. It uses a higher frequency for communication and has a maximum distance of 55 meters for unshielded cables and 100 meters for shielded cables.
  • Category 6A cabling can support 10GBASE-T over both shielded and unshielded cables up to 100 meters.
  • 40GBASE-T (40 gigabit per second Ethernet over twisted pair cabling) requires a minimum of Category 8 cable and only allows communication up to 30 meters based on the 40GBASE-T standard.
  • Ethernet signals can also be transmitted over fiber using standards such as 100BASE-FX (100-megabit Ethernet over fiber) and 10GBASE-SR (10-gigabit Ethernet over short-range multi-mode fiber). These standards allow for longer distances than copper cabling.
  • Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) allows for multiple signals to be sent over the same strand of fiber using different wavelengths. This technology can be used to increase the capacity of a fiber optic link.
  • Coarse Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (CWDM) and Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (DWDM) are types of WDM that use different numbers of carriers. CWDM uses four carriers at different wavelengths, while DWDM uses multiple carriers on a single fiber.

Test your knowledge about Ethernet networking technology, including different types of Ethernet connections, standards, cabling requirements, and transmission over fiber optics. Learn about baseband and broadband technologies, Ethernet standards such as 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 10GBASE-T, as well as Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) and its types.
