Flashcards
Static Sitting
Static Sitting
Sitting for extended periods in a single position puts stress on tendons and intervertebral discs. Frequent posture changes are vital for ergonomic seating.
Chair Seat Height
Chair Seat Height
The optimal height of a chair seat for general use is calculated as the height of the knee crease (P50) plus the thickness of the sole, typically around 43 cm.
Chair Seat Depth
Chair Seat Depth
The appropriate depth of a chair seat should accommodate leg length and be comfortable for the user. A typical depth is 40 cm.

Study Notes
Ergonomics in Industrial Design
- Industrial product design often involves ergonomic considerations, particularly in seating.
- No single ergonomic chair suits all tasks; each needs a different posture.
- Constant sitting in the same position strains ligaments and puts pressure on spinal discs.
- The best posture is the "next posture" one should adopt, constantly shifting.
Seating/Chairs
- A truly ergonomic chair doesn't exist.
- Every task requires a tailored posture.
- Static postures are not ergonomic, necessitating postural adjustments.
Seating Dimensions and Principles
-
Sitting: Chair height should match knee height plus footwear thickness (+43cm). Seat depth is from the buttock to the knee bend (minus 5cm). Seat width should match hip width (+45cm). Seat inclination should be negative (0-5°).
-
Backrest: Backrest height should be from shoulder height minus 10cm (40-50cm). Backrest width equals hip width.
-
Armrests: Armrest height is elbow height (24cm), and distance between armrests is hip width plus 5 cm (50cm). Armrest width 5cm. Armrest length is 20cm.
-
Additional Ergonomic Aspects (Chairs): Chairs should be stackable, lightweight, easy to clean, and resistant to damage from weather and UV light.
