Epistemology is the branch of philosophy concerned with knowledge. It studies the nature, origin, and scope of knowledge, epistemic justification, the rationality of belief, and various related issues. Debates in contemporary epistemology are generally clustered around four core themes: the nature of knowledge, skepticism, the logical status of propositions, and the demarcation of knowledge from mere opinion.
The Nature of Knowledge
Philosophers have long debated the nature of knowledge. Some argue that it is a mental state, while others maintain that it is a relation between a believer and a proposition. Epistemologists also consider the relationship between knowledge and belief, truth, and justification.
Skepticism

Historical Epistemology
Historical epistemology is the study of the historical conditions of, and changes in, different kinds of knowledge. It examines how knowledge has evolved over time and the factors that have influenced its development.
Metaepistemology
Metaepistemology is the metaphilosophical study of the methods, aims, and subject matter of epistemology. It aims to better understand our first-order epistemological inquiry by identifying inaccurate assumptions made in epistemological debates and determining whether the right epistemological questions are being asked.
Social Epistemology
Social epistemology deals with questions about knowledge in contexts where our knowledge attributions cannot be explained by meaning that the scope of our knowledge attributions must be widened to include broader social contexts. It also explores the ways in which interpersonal beliefs can be justified in social contexts.
Feminist Epistemology
Feminist epistemology explores how gender and other hierarchical social relations influence attributions of epistemic authority, considering their impact on general models of knowledge, the epistemic standing of knowers, whose claims various epistemic communities do and ought to accept, and how this affects the distribution of knowledge and ignorance in society.
Constructivism
Constructivism is an epistemological approach that emphasizes the role of the observer in constructing knowledge. It holds that the observer's interpretation of reality is more important than the objective reality itself.
