Grammar Rules

Correct Sentence Structure

  • A grammatically correct sentence should be "They arrived late because of the bad weather."
  • A sentence with a dependent clause should use "because" instead of "due to" for correct grammar.

Subject-Verb Agreement

  • In a sentence with a singular subject, the verb should also be singular (e.g., "The news about the accident is spreading quickly").
  • The subject-verb agreement is correct when the subject "news" is treated as a singular noun.

Semicolon Usage

  • A semicolon is used to separate two independent clauses that are closely related in meaning (e.g., "I went to the store; however, they were out of milk").
  • A semicolon is not used to separate a dependent clause from an independent clause.

Pronoun Case

  • The objective case "her" is used as the object of the verb "helped" (e.g., "My friend helped me and her finish the project").
  • The subject "I" should be replaced with the object "me" when it is the object of the verb.

Dangling Modifiers

  • A dangling modifier is a word or phrase that is not clearly linked to the word it modifies (e.g., "Running errands, my phone rang" is incorrect because "running errands" is not clearly linked to the subject "my phone").
  • A dangling modifier can be corrected by rephrasing the sentence to clearly link the modifier to the subject (e.g., "While I was running errands, my phone rang").
