Emergency Vehicle Driver/Operator Procedures
- Spring Fire Department (SFD) policy requires all driver/operators to be at least 21 years old, with no exceptions.
- An annual review of driver records is conducted by the Department of Motor Vehicles, and members must have no more than two Class B and no Class A violations within a three-year period.
- A Class A violation results in a license suspension from the DMV and an 18-month suspension from driving SFD vehicles.
- A Class B violation results in a warning letter after two violations and a 90-day suspension after three violations within a three-year period.
- A driver/operator must complete an approved driver improvement program and be recertified after a suspension for Class B or A violations.
- A Circle of Safety must be conducted before starting the vehicle, which involves inspecting all sides and top of the vehicle for obstructions and verifying clearance with the officer riding in the passenger seat.
- During an actual emergency response, all audible and visual warning devices must be activated, regardless of time of day or traffic conditions.
