Electricity Ordinance
- The Electricity Ordinance is an act to control and regulate electrical installations and the supply of electricity, and for connected and incidental purposes.
- Came into effect on 1st January, 1956.
Definitions
- "Apparatus" refers to electrical apparatus, including machines, consuming devices, and fittings that use conductors.
- "Area of supply" is the area where a licensee is authorized to supply energy.
- "Competent person" is a person certified by the Director to perform or execute work related to electrical installations.
- "Conductor" is an electrical conductor connected to a system.
- "Consumer" is a person supplied with energy or whose premises are connected for the purpose of a supply of energy.
Electrical Installations
- "Danger" refers to the risk of harm to health, human life, or limb, or damage to property due to electrical shock, burn, or other injuries.
- "Director" refers to the Director of Electricity Supply, including any person acting or temporarily discharging the duties of that office.
- "Distribution" means conveying electrical energy through a distribution network at or below high voltage.
Electrical Terms
- "Energy" refers to electrical energy when generated, transmitted, supplied, distributed, or utilized for any purpose except communication or signal transmission.
- "Equipment" includes any item for generating, converting, transmitting, distributing, or transforming electrical energy.
- "Extra high voltage" means a voltage exceeding 3000 volts.
- "Generating station" is a station for generating electrical energy, including buildings and plant used for that purpose.
- "Generator" is a rotating machine that changes mechanical energy into electrical energy.
Inspectors and Licenses
- "Inspector" refers to an Electrical Inspector appointed under section 3, including the Director.
- "Installation" means the whole plant or equipment designed for the supply or use of energy, including prime movers and necessary buildings and land.
- "License" refers to a license issued under section 4(1) to supply energy.
- "Licensee" is the holder of a license issued under section 4(1).
Other Terms
- "Live" or "alive" refers to a system or part of a system with a voltage existing between any conductor and earth or between any two conductors.
- "Management" refers to the authorized person in charge of an installation by the licensee, owner, or contractor.
- "Minister" refers to the Minister responsible for electricity.
- "Motor" is an equipment or machine that transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy.
- "Post" refers to a pole, tower, or other structure used for the supply, distribution, and transmission of electricity.
- "Power generating plant" is a building, plant, or facility used for generating or producing electrical energy.

- "Public safety" refers to the obviation of danger to the general public, public property, and roads, streets, railways, canals, docks, wharves, piers, bridges, gas-works, water-works, and telegraphic, telephone, and other electrical signaling lines.
- "Street" includes any road, lane, path, passage, or open space, whether a thoroughfare or not, over which the public have a right of way.
- "Supply" refers to the supply of electrical energy through supply lines to premises other than those occupied by a licensee for carrying on authorized activities.
- "Supply line" is a conductor or conductors or other means of conveying, transmitting, or distributing energy, including casing, coating, covering, tube, pipe, insulator, or post.
- "System" is an electrical system where all conductors and apparatus are electrically or magnetically connected.
- "Transmit" or "transmission" refers to the transmission of electricity through a transmission system consisting of high voltage or extra high voltage lines and electrical equipment.
