Study Notes
Bonding and Grounding Requirements
- A bonding jumper is unnecessary if a separate grounding conductor is present.
- Metal outdoor lighting standards are defined as poles over twelve feet (3.66 meters) high.
- Metal lighting standards must connect to a ten-foot (3.05 meters) copperweld ground rod or twenty feet (6.10 meters) of conductive rebar, minimum diameter of one-half inch (1.27 centimeters), using a bonding jumper.
- Ground rod should be installed at the metal standard base center, extending slightly above the base.
- Both the ground rod and equipment grounding conductor must connect to the metal standards.
- Bonding jumper requirements adhere to the National Electrical Code (NEC) from 2017 until December 31, 2020, with updates in the 2020 NEC, and wire sizes must be at least no. 8 copper or no. 6 aluminum.
Grounding Electrode Conductor
- Grounding electrode conductor connects to the grounded service conductor at the service disconnect enclosure.
Wiring Methods in Agricultural Buildings
- Covers electrical installations in buildings housing livestock, poultry, and similar areas.
- All electrical setups must follow NEC article 547, with 2017 NEC provisions applicable until December 31, 2020, and 2020 NEC afterwards.
- Site-isolating devices may be installed at distribution points for multiple agricultural structures.
- Electric metallic tubing cannot be used in concrete below grade or in contact with earth.
- Aluminum conduit is prohibited from earth contact or being embedded in concrete.
- Rigid nonmetallic conduit installations must comply with NEC article 352.
Conditional Locations
- Facilities such as fertilizer rooms and meatpacking plants face corrosive conditions, demanding special wiring methods.
- Fire-rated cables are allowable in certain applications under NEC guidelines.
Outlet Boxes and Fittings Requirements
- Use of more than one extension ring on outlet boxes requires special electrical inspector permission.
- Outlet boxes or conduit bodies must be installed at every opening, splice, or connection.
Appliance Wiring Regulations
- For fuel-fired furnaces (120V, 20A or less) in residences, six feet of flexible appliance cord is allowed, with GFCI protection required for receptacles.
Electric Vehicle Charging System Specifications
- Overcurrent protection for electric vehicle charging equipment must accommodate continuous duty ratings of at least 125% of the maximum load.
Voltage Drop Calculations
- Voltage drop can be calculated using the formula: Voltage drop = (K x L x I) / CMA, with specific K factors for copper and aluminum.
- Important parameters include length (L), load in amps (I), and circular-mil area (CMA).
Occupancy Classifications
- Health care occupancies provide care for individuals incapable of self-preservation, including hospitals, nursing homes, and limited care facilities.
- Ambulatory health care facilities serve four or more outpatients simultaneously.
- Detention and correctional facilities house individuals under restraint, encompassing various types of correctional institutions.
Residential Occupancies
- Defined as accommodations for normal residential purposes, excluding health care or detention-related facilities.
