Study Notes

  • Chapter 1 focusses on economic systems

Definition of the concept Economic system

  • An Economic system is how decisions are made regarding the organization of production components (capital, raw materials, labor, entrepreneurship) to produce and distribute goods and services.
  • The three main Economic questions show the differences between economic systems:
    • What is produced?
    • How, how much and by whom, is the production done by?
    • For whom is it produced?
  • There are three basic Economic systems:
    • Centrally planned system
    • Mixed system
    • Free market system
  • These systems are closely linked to different political systems.

Three types of Economic systems

  • Centrally planned system.
  • A quote by Malcolm X refers to a centrally planned system when he says "Show me a Capitalist, and I’ll show you a bloodsucker".
  • In a Centrally planned system all Economic activities are planned by the government in a central place.
  • The focus is on what the state needs which is mostly industrial goods with little emphasis on consumer goods.
  • In a Centrally planned system
    • The government only approves what is produced.
    • The government decides how much of each product/service should be produced and who should do it: there is often no freedom of choice to choose your own profession.
    • The government decides who receives the goods and services (after they have taken what they need).
  • Theoretically there will be no unemployment in a Centrally planned system because the government will use all citizens to create goods and services for the benefit of the country, but this is not the case in reality.
