Study Notes
Layers of the Earth
- Earth's layers include the Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, and Inner Core
- The Crust is the outermost layer
- Two characteristics of the Crust are its thinness and high density variations
- The Mantle is the layer beneath the Crust
- Two characteristics of the Mantle include its thick layer and semi-molten state
- The difference between the inner and outer core is their respective solid and liquid states
Density
- Density is a measure of how tightly packed a material is
- Density is calculated by dividing the mass of an object by its volume
Density of Earth's Layers
- Density changes as you move from the crust to the inner core—increasing as you descend
- Objects with higher density sink in water, while those with lower density float
Rocks and the Rock Cycle
- Rocks are classified as igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic
- Processes like weathering, erosion, compaction, cementation, melting and cooling affect the rock cycle
Superposition & Geologic Time
- The law of superposition states that in undisturbed rock layers, the oldest layers are at the bottom and the youngest at the top.
- The principle of superposition is important for understanding Earth's history as it provides a way to determine relative ages of rocks.
- Fossils can be used to determine the age of rock layers; rocks that contain similar fossils are likely to be of similar ages
Spheres of the Earth
- The spheres of Earth include the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere
- Interactions between spheres influence Earth's processes
Plate Tectonics
- Plate boundaries include convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries
- Examples of plate boundaries are given
Earthquakes
- Earthquakes are often caused by plate tectonics
- Earthquakes can be described using seismic waves (primary, secondary, and surface) waves
Volcanoes
- Volcanoes are found in specific areas of the world
- Volcanoes can have both negative (e.g., ash clouds) and positive (new land, mineral deposits) effects on the environment
