Early Life and Education
- Jose Rizal was born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Laguna
- He was baptized on June 20, 1861, by Padre Rufino Collantes and had Padre Pedro Casañas as his godfather
- At 3 years old, Rizal was taught the alphabet by his mother, and at 9 years old, he was sent to study in Biñan under Justiniano Aquino Cruz
- In 1872, Rizal entered the Ateneo Municipal de Manila, where he received his first medal and the grade of Sobresaliente in all subjects
- On March 14, 1877, Rizal earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with Sobresaliente and the highest honors
Writing and Travels
- In 1884, Rizal began writing the first half of "Noli Me Tangere" in Madrid, while studying medicine
- He completed the fourth part of the novel in Paris and another part in Germany
- Rizal finished "Noli Me Tangere" on February 21, 1887, and printed 2,000 copies at a cost of 300 pesos
- Maximo Viola helped Rizal and lent him 300 pesos
- On February 3, 1888, Rizal left Manila for Europe to avoid conflict with the Spanish authorities
- In 1891, his second novel "El Filibusterismo" was published in Ghent, Belgium
