Direct Access Legislation
- Physical therapy practice is unlawful without referral from a licensed doctor of medicine, osteopathy, chiropractic, podiatry, dental surgery, nurse practitioner or physician assistant.
- A physical therapist (PT) with approved certification can evaluate and treat patients for up to 60 days (previously 30) without a referral, under specific conditions.
- The patient cannot be receiving care for the same condition from another licensed provider.
- If the patient is receiving care from another provider, the patient must identify the other provider, provide written consent for release of patient information, and the PT must share the initial evaluation and patient history within 14 days of treatment start.
- Treatment beyond 60 days requires a referral.
- A PT cannot evaluate the same patient for the same condition within 60 days of a previous evaluation.
One-Time Evaluation
- A PT who hasn't completed a DPT program or obtained authorization can conduct a one-time evaluation, but treatment is not allowed without a referral.
- The evaluation may lead to referrals for further medical care if appropriate.
Invasive Procedures
- Invasive procedures (e.g., dry needling) require referral and direction from a licensed medical provider.
Direct Access Certification Requirements
- Applicants must provide evidence to the board that they meet one of the following qualifications:
- Completed a transitional doctor of physical therapy program (recognized by the board)
- Have at least 3 years of post-licensure active practice and 15 hours of continuing education in medical screening and differential diagnosis, including passing a post-course examination.
