Digestive System
- The digestive system starts with the oral cavity and includes the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), which consists of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum), and large intestine (colon and rectum).
- The GIT has a similar structure across different segments, with modifications for specific functions.
Esophagus
- The esophagus is lined by nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
- It has a submucosa with esophageal glands and a muscularis externa.
- The muscularis externa has skeletal muscle in the upper portion, mixed skeletal and smooth muscle in the middle third, and smooth muscle in the lower third
- The esophagus has a distinct transition zone between the middle and lower third, marked by the appearance of submucosal glands.
Stomach
- The stomach is lined by simple columnar epithelium and has a complex mucosa, with 2-3 layers of muscularis mucosae, gastric glands, gastric pits, and rugae.
- The stomach has three layers of muscularis externa: inner oblique, middle circular, and outer longitudinal.
- Various cell types in the gastric mucosa:
- Surface mucous cells: secrete an alkaline fluid containing mucin to protect the stomach lining.
- Mucous neck cells: secrete an acidic fluid containing mucin.
- Parietal cells: secrete intrinsic factor and hydrochloric acid.
- Chief cells/ zymogenic cells: secrete pepsinogen and gastric lipase.
- G cells/ Enteroendocrine cells: secrete gastrin into the blood.
- Undifferentiated cells: potential for differentiation into other cell types.
Small Intestine
- The small intestine is characterized by the presence of finger-like villi and relatively fewer goblet cells.
- The small intestine has a 2-layered muscularis externa.
- Plicae circulares, also known as valves of Kerckring, are folds in the intestinal lining that increase surface area, promoting efficient absorption.
Large Intestine
- The large intestine includes the colon and rectum.
- It is characterized by the presence of crypts which are tubular invaginations of the intestinal epithelium, goblet cells, and the absence of villi.
