Digestive System
- The digestive system transforms food into nutrients, which are carried by the circulatory system to the body's cells.
- The digestive system consists of the digestive tract (a set of organs and structures) and accessory glands.
Digestive Tract
- Mouth: The entry point to the digestive system, containing teeth and tongue.
- Pharynx: Shared by the digestive and respiratory systems.
- Esophagus: A muscular tube connecting the pharynx to the stomach.
- Stomach: The widest part of the digestive tract, with valves preventing food from flowing back up.
- Small Intestine: A folded tube in the abdominal cavity with three sections: duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
- Large Intestine: Comprised of the cecum, colon, and rectum, with a small extension called the vermiform appendix. The rectum leads to the anus for waste removal.
Accessory Glands
- Salivary Glands: Produce saliva, which is released into the oral cavity to aid digestion.
- Liver: Produces bile, stored in the gallbladder, and released into the duodenum. It's the largest gland in the body.
- Pancreas: Secretes pancreatic juice and other substances into the duodenum. Located below the stomach.
