Study Notes
Storage Function
- The stomach muscle relaxes as the volume of food inside it increases.
- This means that the pressure inside the stomach doesn't increase significantly, despite the growing content.
- The stomach can hold between 0.8 and 1.5 liters of food before it starts to feel full.
Mixing and Propulsive Function
- The stomach secretes gastric juices which mix with the food.
- Regular muscular contractions, called mixing waves, occur every 15-20 seconds to churn the food.
- These contractions increase in strength, creating tighter rings that push the food towards the pylorus (the exit of the stomach).
- The combination of the constricting ring and the closed pylorus forces the food backward, resulting in the mixing of food with gastric secretions.
- The resulting mixture is called chyme, which is a thick, semi-liquid, cloudy substance.
