Study Notes

Developmental Anomalies of Teeth

Hutchinson's Teeth

  • Characterized by notched or peg-shaped incisors
  • Caused by congenital syphilis
  • Teeth are smaller and more widely spaced than normal
  • Often accompanied by other congenital defects

Dental Agenesis (Hypodontia)

  • Failure of one or more teeth to develop
  • Can be isolated or part of a larger syndrome (e.g. ectodermal dysplasias)
  • Affects approximately 2-4% of the population
  • More common in permanent teeth than primary teeth

Dens In Dente

  • Also known as "dens invaginatus"
  • Developmental anomaly of tooth development
  • Characterized by enamel-lined invagination in the crown or root of the tooth
  • Can be classified into three types based on severity
  • Often associated with other developmental anomalies (e.g. taurodontism)

Dental Fusion

  • Union of two or more teeth
  • Can occur in primary or permanent teeth
  • Classified into two types:
    • True fusion: teeth are joined by dentin and enamel
    • Fusion by concrescence: teeth are joined by cementum only
  • Can cause spacing and alignment issues in the dental arch

Enamel Hypoplasia

  • Defect in enamel formation
  • Can be caused by genetic or environmental factors (e.g. nutritional deficiencies)
  • Characterized by enamel that is thin, soft, or missing
  • Can be localized to specific teeth or affect entire dentition
  • Increases risk of tooth decay and sensitivity
