Study Notes

Tooth Development Stages

  • Histophysiologic stage: involves deficient or excessive development
  • Morphologic stage: counterparts of histophysiologic stage

Dental Anomalies

  • Hyperdontia: excessive development, characterized by an increased number of teeth
  • Hypodontia: deficient development, characterized by a decreased number of teeth
  • Oligodontia: a type of hypodontia where there are only a few teeth present
  • Odonto-ontia: a rare condition where there is a mass of dental tissue

Tooth Structure

  • Enamel and dentin structure: affected in amelogenesis imperfecta type I (hypoplastic) and IV (hypoplastic/pumice-like)
  • Amelogenesis imperfecta type II (hypomaturation) affects enamel maturation
  • Amelogenesis imperfecta type IV affects enamel and dentin maturation

Tooth Size and Shape

  • Microdontia: abnormally small teeth
  • Macrodontia: abnormally large teeth
  • Peg lateral: a type of microdontia where the tooth is small and peg-shaped
  • Mulberry molars: a type of anomaly where the tooth has multiple small cusps
  • Carabelli's cusp: a small extra cusp on the lingual surface of a tooth
  • Taurodontism: a type of anomaly where the tooth has a large pulp chamber and short roots

Tooth Number and Structure

  • Dens in dente: a type of anomaly where there is a small tooth-like structure inside a normal tooth
  • Dens evaginatus: a type of anomaly where there is an extra cusp or tubercle on the tooth
  • Gemination: a type of anomaly where two teeth are joined together
  • Fusion: a type of anomaly where two teeth are joined together
  • Concrescence: a type of anomaly where two teeth are joined together by cementum

Tooth Eruption

  • Delayed eruption: delay in the eruption of teeth
  • Natal/neonatal teeth: teeth that are present at birth
  • Accelerated eruption: rapid eruption of teeth

Test your knowledge on dental development stages and anomalies including histophysiologic stage, morphologic stage, and nature of anomalies like hyperdontia and hypodontia.
