The Indigenous Peoples and the Europeans

  • The first inhabitants of the Caribbean were Indigenous Peoples, also called Pre-Columbian Indians.
  • They migrated from Asia to the Americas and Caribbean approximately 15-20,000 years ago during the Fourth Ice Age.
  • The Bering Strait became an "Ice Bridge" between Alaska and Siberia.
  • They were nomadic hunters following herds of animals (mammoths, deer, caribou), searching for food and shelter as their main activities.
  • These Asian migrants were referred to as Mongoloids.
  • Indigenous groups developed their own cultures and languages.

Settlement Patterns in the Americas

  • Some migrated to North America, and continued to hunt.
  • These groups formed tribes based on common languages and shared social characteristics.
  • In North America, groups like the Iroquois (Mohawk) and Eskimo settled. Others settled in regions like the Great Plains (Florida Peninsula and Alaska), the Incas in Chile, Argentina, Nicaragua, and Peru, the Aztecs in Mexico and the Maya in the Yucatan Peninsula.
  • These civilizations developed into established societies and unique cultures.
  • The first group of Amerindians to arrive in the Caribbean were the Ciboney who settled in Cuba.
  • The Tainos (Arawaks) and Kalinagos (Caribs) followed.
  • The Tainos settled mostly in the Greater Antilles (Puerto Rico, Cuba, Hispaniola, and Jamaica).
  • The Kalinagos mainly settled in the Lesser Antilles (Trinidad, Dominica, St. Vincent).

The Tainos/Arawaks

  • Short to medium height, well-shaped, but slightly built.
  • Their skin was olive-coloured (smooth and brown),
  • Flattened foreheads (as babies)
  • Broad noses.
  • Black, straight, coarse hair.

Economic Organization

  • Subsistence living (growing just enough food)
  • Manioc (cassava) was their staple crop.
  • Other crops: maize, sweet potato, cotton, groundnuts, and tobacco.
  • They also fished, hunted, and gathered food.
  • Domesticated dogs (alcos).
  • Methods included stewing, baking, roasting, barbecuing or using a remora to catch turtles.
  • Variety of fruits and vegetables, like pineapple, star apple, mammy apple, hog plums, guavas, paw-paw.
