CSC 111: Internet, WWW, and E-commerce
- The Internet is a worldwide collection of networks connecting millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and individuals.
- The Internet originated as ARPANET in September 1969 with two main goals: allowing scientists at different locations to share information and function even if parts of the network were disabled or destroyed by a disaster.
- In 1969, ARPANET became functional.
- In 1984, ARPANET had over 1,000 computers connected as hosts. Millions of hosts now connect to the Internet.
- With wired connections, a computer or device physically attaches via a cable or wire to a communications device.
- Computers without physical connections can use a wireless modem or other wireless communication device.
- Connecting to the Internet can use wired methods like cable internet service, DSL (digital subscriber line), and Fiber to the Premises (FTTP).
- Wireless internet connections include Wi-Fi, Mobile broadband, Fixed wireless, and Satellite internet service.
- A hot spot is a wireless network providing internet connections to mobile computers and devices.
- An Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides internet access for a fee or free.
- Bandwidth is the amount of data traveling over a network, measured in megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB).
- An IP address is a unique sequence of numbers identifying each internet-connected device.
- A domain name is a text-based name corresponding to an IP address.
- DNS (Domain Name System) translates the domain name into its associated IP address.
- Common Top Level Domains (TLDs) include .com (commercial), .edu (education), .gov (government), .mil (military), .net (network), and .org (non-profit).
- A webpage's address called a URL (Universal Resource Locator) has parts including the protocol (http), host/domain name, path, and webpage name. A web browser displays information from this URL.
- A web search engine finds websites, webpages, images, videos, news, maps, and other information related to a specific topic.
- A subject directory organizes webpages by categories like sports or shopping and related subcategories.
- Search operators can refine searches (e.g., using "+" to include specific words, "OR" for choices, quotation marks for exact phrases, and asterisks for wildcard searches).
- Websites are categorized into types such as entertainment, shopping, education, finance, research, health, weather, sports, and news.
- Electronic commerce (e-commerce) involves buying and selling items over the Internet. Three types are Business-to-Consumer (B2C), Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C), and Business-to-Business (B2B).
- Multimedia combines text with other media like graphics, animation, audio, video, and virtual reality.
- Email is transmitting messages and files via a computer network. Email programs let users compose, send, receive, forward, store, print, and delete emails.
- Instant messaging (IM) notifies users when contacts are online, enabling message and file sharing or private chat rooms.
- VoIP (Voice over IP) allows voice communication over internet connections.
- FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a standard for uploading and downloading files between computers.
- Netiquette is a code of acceptable Internet behavior. Netiquette includes being polite, avoiding offensive language, using emoticons appropriately, and being polite.
Summary
- The summary covers the evolution of the internet, web technologies, various website types, internet services, and netiquette guidelines.
