Study Notes
CPR Basics
- The correct rate of chest compressions for an adult victim is at least 100 per minute.
- The correct depth of chest compressions for an adult victim is 6-8 cm.
2-Rescuer CPR
- Rescuers should switch roles every 2 minutes when performing 2-rescuer CPR.
- This is to prevent fatigue and maintain effective CPR.
CPR for Children
- For a 3-year-old child, chest compressions should be performed with one hand, with the heel of the hand on the center of the chest.
- The correct rate of chest compressions for a child is 100-120 per minute.
- For an infant, chest compressions should be performed with two fingers, with the fingers on the center of the chest.
Airway Obstruction
- If a patient with an airway obstruction becomes unresponsive, lay them on the ground, open the airway, and attempt to give two rescue breaths.
- If the patient is still unresponsive, start chest compression immediately.
Bleeding Control
- If someone is bleeding from a wound, apply pressure to the injury to control the bleeding.
- Do not let the blood drain out, tie a tourniquet, or dab the injury with something ice cold.
Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest
- Cardiac arrest is when a victim's heart stops beating.
- Heart attack is when the heart muscle is damaged due to a lack of blood flow.
Chain of Survival
- The chain of survival for adults includes activation of the emergency medical system, CPR, early defibrillation, and advanced life support.
- The first link in the chain of survival is to recognize the emergency and call for help.
Breathing Assessment
- Adequate signs of breathing include equal expansion of both sides of the chest, air moving in and out of the nose, and present and equal breath sounds.
- Breathing assessment should not exceed 10 seconds.
Infant CPR
- Use the rate of 100-120 compressions per minute for infant CPR.
- Press in the middle portion of the sternum using two fingers.
- Compression-to-ventilation ratio is 30:3.
- Check for circulation by feeling the carotid pulse.
CPR Complications
- Complications of CPR include broken ribs and lung injuries.
- These complications can occur if CPR is not performed correctly.
