Study Notes
Urinary System Overview
- Comprises four main organs: kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra.
- Kidneys perform excretory, regulatory, and endocrine functions.
- Kidney weight: 125–175 g (male), 115–155 g (female); dimensions approximately 11–14 cm long, 6 cm wide, and 4 cm thick.
- Covered by a fibrous capsule of dense, irregular connective tissue for protection.
Kidney Position and Relation
- Positioned at the posterior abdominal wall beside the vertebral column.
- Extends from thoracic vertebra XII (TXII) to lumbar vertebra II-III (LII – LIII).
- Right kidney is lower than the left due to the liver's position.
- Superior pole of right kidney aligns with rib XII, left kidney with rib XI.
Internal Structure of the Kidney
- Divided into the outer renal cortex and inner renal medulla.
- Renal columns are connective tissue that separate renal pyramids and papillae.
- Renal papillae: bundles of collecting ducts transporting urine to the calyces for excretion.
- Kidneys are divided into 6–8 lobes by renal columns.
Renal Hilum
- Entry/exit point for blood vessels, nerves, lymphatics, and ureters.
- Renal pelvis is formed from major and minor calyxes, emerging from the hilum.
- Renal artery, vein, and pelvis arranged in an anterior-to-posterior order.
Nephron
- Functional microscopic unit of the kidney.
- Each nephron consists of a renal corpuscle and convoluted tubules.
- Renal corpuscle includes glomerulus (capillary cluster) and Bowman's capsule.
Ureter
- Tubes that transport urine from kidneys to the urinary bladder (specifically the trigone area).
- Average ureter length ranges from 25 to 32 cm.
- Divided into three parts: abdominal, pelvic, and intramural.
- Abdominal ureter is retroperitoneal and longer; intramural part is the shortest (1.5 – 2 cm) and narrowest.
- Ureter has three constant points of constriction throughout its length.
