.IN Domain Name Policy Framework
- The new policy by INNIC under NIXI targets 100,000 .IN domain name registrations at the end of the first year, with an average annual growth of 50% over the next couple of years.
- Unlimited generic .IN registration will be open to the public at the 2nd level.
- Unlimited generic 3rd level registrations will also be open to the public in popular zones like .co.in, .net.in, .org.in, etc.
Reserved Zones
- The zones .gov.in, .mil.in, .ac.in, and .edu.in will be reserved for the Government, Defence, and Educational institutions respectively.
- Registrations at the 3rd level in these zones will be carried out by the Government or an institution identified by the Government.
State Governments and Union Territories
- State Governments and Union Territories can register under .gov.in category.
- They are also free to register at the 2nd level using a two-letter nomenclature adopted by the Transport Department.
- City administrations can register at the 3rd level either with the State or under .gov.in category.
Prohibited Registrations
- One or two character domain registration will not be allowed at the 2nd and 3rd levels for use by the general public.
Reserved Names
- The following category of names will be reserved before opening registration at 2nd/3rd levels:
- Constitutional Authorities
- States/Union Territories/Cities
- Specific Names for Registry use
Trademark Owners and Intellectual Property
- Trademark owners, registered companies, and owners of intellectual property have a legitimate interest in protecting their brand.
- The Registry should adhere to interoperable technical standards announced by ICANN.
Policy Framework and Implementation
- The policy framework focuses on creating liberal, efficient, and market-friendly processes and a distributed organizational structure.
