Coronary Arteries and Veins
- The heart receives blood through coronary arteries.
- Coronary arteries originate from the aorta.
- The right coronary artery (RCA) supplies blood to the right atrium, right ventricle, part of the left ventricle and the back of the septum.
- The left coronary artery (LCA) divides into two branches: the circumflex artery and the left anterior descending artery (LAD).
- The circumflex artery supplies the left atrium and the side and back of the left ventricle.
- The LAD supplies the front and bottom of the left ventricle and the front of the septum.
- Coronary veins collect deoxygenated blood from the heart muscle.
- These veins return the blood to the right atrium.
- The right coronary artery supplies the right atrium, right ventricle, bottom of both ventricles, and back of the septum.
- The left circumflex artery supplies the left atrium and left ventricle.
- The left anterior descending artery supplies the right ventricle, left ventricle, and interventricular septum.
- The right marginal artery supplies the right ventricle and apex.
- The left marginal artery supplies the left ventricle.
Collateral Circulation
- A network of tiny blood vessels exists in the heart.
- Under normal conditions, this network is not open.
- When coronary arteries are narrowed (coronary artery disease), collateral vessels enlarge and become active.
- This allows blood to flow around the blocked artery, protecting the heart tissue from injury.
