    COPD Overview

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a type of lung disease characterized by obstruction of airflow that interferes with normal breathing. It typically affects people who smoke cigarettes and those exposed to other environmental pollutants such as industrial emissions.

    Symptoms

Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may include shortness of breath, coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, frequent respiratory infections, and difficulty performing routine daily activities due to shortness of breath. Chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and chronic asthma are all types of COPD, which contribute differently to these symptoms.

    Diagnosis

Asymptomatic individuals often go unrecognized until advanced stages, while others have persistent coughs and recurrent symptoms requiring diagnoses of acute exacerbations when they seek help. Underdiagnosis is common due to patients' nonadherence, poor self-awareness, lack of understanding about their condition, and misperception of symptoms. COPD is diagnosed through spirometry, a simple breath test that provides an objective measurement of lung function.

    Causes

The main cause of COPD is smoking tobacco; however, exposure to secondhand smoke, air pollution, and workplace dust also contribute to its development.

    Prevention

Preventing COPD involves two strategies: avoidance of risk factors and appropriate management of established disease. Non-smokers should avoid starting smoking, while smokers should quit immediately. In addition, people should try to minimize exposure to toxic fumes and gases in workplaces and during recreational activities.

    Treatment Options

Treatment for COPD includes medications like bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and combination inhalers; oxygen therapy; pulmonary rehabilitation; and surgery. Smoking cessation is crucial and also helps prevent complications. Vaccinations against influenza and pneumonia are recommended for patients with COPD.
