    Study Notes

    COPD Overview

    • COPD is a progressive lung disease characterized by airflow limitation.
    • Smoking is the leading cause, accounting for 15-20% of cases.
    • Other causes include occupational dusts, chemicals, and exposure to secondhand smoke or biomass smoke.
    • Three out of four cases of COPD occur among smokers.

    COPD Prognosis

    • Depending on health, age, and symptoms, individuals with severe COPD stages lose approximately 8-9 years of life expectancy.
    • Life expectancy is reduced further for past and current smokers.
    • With good management and control, individuals diagnosed with COPD can expect to live for 10-20 years.

    COPD Causes

    • Smoking is the most common cause.
    • Exposure to occupational dusts and chemicals
    • Exposure to biomass smoke (coal, wood, or charcoal)
    • Exposure to secondhand smoke

    COPD Symptoms

    • Long-lasting cough (over 3 months) accompanied by mucus.
    • Shortness of breath, especially during exertion.
    • Wheezing.
    • Respiratory infections (flu, bronchitis, pneumonia).
    • Unintentional weight loss and fatigue.
    • Possible loss of weight without trying, and feeling tired more often

    COPD Stages

    • Stage 1: Mild symptoms, often unnoticed except during exertion, dry cough.
    • Stage 2: Increased shortness of breath and persistent cough, with mucus production.
    • Stage 3: Severe symptoms, particularly in the morning, frequent flare-ups and ankle/leg swelling.
    • Stage 4: Severe shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, crackling sounds in the lungs, possible delirium, weight loss, and pulmonary hypertension.

    COPD Treatments

    • Quitting smoking is crucial.
    • COPD-prescribed medications
    • Pulmonary rehabilitation
    • Supplemental oxygen
    • Non-invasive ventilation (NIV)
    • Endobronchial valve (EBV) surgery
    • Clinical trials
    • Prescribed steroids
    • Inhalers (per doctor's recommendation)
    • Aerobic exercise, for better oxygen use.

    COPD Facts

    • There is no known cure for COPD.
    • Over 2 million Canadians live with COPD, including 26% of those over 85.
    • Average age of COPD development is after 35 years.
    • Researchers recommend avoiding sugary drinks like soda, energy drinks, and fizzy drinks for better overall health.
