Study Notes

The Beginnings of the Conflict

  • In 1947, the United Nations adopted Resolution 181, dividing the British Mandate of Palestine into two independent states, one Palestinian and one Jewish.
  • The resolution gave the United Nations international control over religiously significant areas surrounding Jerusalem.
  • Palestinians refused to agree with the mandate, as it seemed to favour the Jews and was unfair to the Arab population.

The First Arab-Israeli War and Its Consequences

  • Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948, leading to the first Arab-Israeli War (1948-1949).
  • The war resulted in Israel's victory, the displacement of around 750,000 Palestinians, and the division of territory into three parts: the State of Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.

The Six-Day War and Its Impact

  • In June 1967, Israel attacked Egyptian and Syrian air forces, starting the Six-Day War.
  • By the end of the war, Israel gained territorial control over the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza Strip from Egypt, the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria.

Hamas: An Islamist Military Group

  • Hamas, or "Islamic Resistance Movement," is an Islamist military group that controls the Gaza Strip since Israel's victory in the Six-Day War.
  • In 1988, Hamas published a document declaring their ideologies and objectives, including calls for the murder of Jews, the destruction of Israel, and the establishment of an Islamic society within Palestine.

Hamas' Takeover of the Gaza Strip

  • After Israel's withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, Hamas informally took full control over the strip and formed their own government in 2006.
  • Hamas has relentlessly challenged Israel through various attacks, including suicide bombs, mass shootings, rocket strikes, and kidnappings.

Recent Conflict (2023-2024)

  • On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a strategic and devastating assault on Israel's southern territories, using thousands of rockets and infiltrating towns with militants.
  • This attack is considered the most horrific throughout Israel's seventy-five-year history.
  • As of January 7, 2024, at least 22,835 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed, and around 58,416 others have been left severely injured.
