Study Notes
- Type 1 concrete is used for normal applications, not subjected to severe conditions or sulfate attack, and is suitable for pavements, sidewalks, buildings, bridges, tanks, water pipes, and masonry units.
- Type 2 concrete is used for moderate sulfate attack resistance, producing less heat and suitable for structures of mass like piers, abutments, retaining walls, and warm weather concreting.
- Type 3 concrete is used for early strength gain and is not critical for heat generation, allowing for shorter periods of strength development and reduced heating requirements in cold-weather concreting.
- Type 4 concrete is used for minimizing heat generation and has a slower rate of strength development, often used in large structures like gravity dams.
- Type 5, or sulfate-resisting, cement is used for structures exposed to high sulfate concentrations and aggressive environmental conditions, such as pile foundations, basement structures, sewage and water treatment plants, sea walls, dams, reservoirs, petrochemical factories, and construction in coastal areas.
- Air-entaining Portland Cements are used to create concrete with microscopic air bubbles for improved workability and durability.
- White Portland Cement is a true Portland cement used for producing white or colored concrete or mortar.
- Portland Blast-furnace slag cement is created by blending Portland cement and granulated blast furnace slag, suitable for general concrete construction.
- Portland-pozzolan Cement is created by inter-grinding Portland cement clinker and a pozzolan, used primarily for large hydraulic structures like bridge piers and dams.
- Type I and Type II masonry cements are manufactured for masonry applications, containing Portland cement and air-entraining additives for improved workability and water retention.
