Keyboard Shortcuts
- Press the special key indicated first, hold it down, and then press the second key.
- Examples: Ctrl + S to save a document, or Ctrl + G to save a document depending on the application.
- Key combinations can change from one application to another.
Keyboard Functions
- Alt Gr + 2: @ symbol
- Shift + 2: " symbol
- If you simply press 2, you will get the number 2.
Mouse Buttons
- Middle button (or cogwheel): used to scroll up or down the screen.
- Right button: used to display the context menu, which changes depending on the selected object.
Mouse Functions
- Click: select an object, such as a window, button, or icon.
- Click and drag: select multiple objects at the same time.
- Double-click: execute an action, such as opening a folder, document, or starting a program.
Mouse Pointers
- Normal: an arrow shape.
- Busy: a disc shape, indicating the computer is processing and cannot perform other operations.
- Text: a shape that appears when you can enter text.
- Insertion point: a shape that indicates where the next letter you type will be inserted.
Configuring the Mouse
- To change the mouse settings: Start > Settings > Devices > Mouse & Touchpad.
- Option to select the Left button or Right button.
Using the On-Screen Keyboard
- Accessible through Start > All Apps > Windows Accessibility > On-Screen Keyboard.
- Can also be found through the search engine in the Start menu.
- Can be used with or without a touchscreen.
Closing Windows
- Closing all windows: Close All Windows option.
- Closing a single window: Close window option.
- Options when closing: Save, Do not save, or Cancel.
Start Menu
- The Start menu has a fixed section at the bottom with four options
- It shows suggestions for apps from the Microsoft online store and notices for recently installed programs
- Clicking on the username opens a menu with options, including Change Account Settings, Lock, and Logging out
Start Menu App List
- The Start menu lists the most used apps, which changes according to the programs opened
- Each app has a small icon > that shows a list of recent files when clicked
- This feature is called Jump Lists, introduced in Windows for the first time
- Jump Lists can be anchored to keep a document in the list
Settings Window
- The new Settings window in Windows 10 simplifies configuration tasks
- It displays various topics in a simple interface with icons that group together related options
- Clicking on an icon changes the window, showing a panel with themes on the left and parameters to configure on the right
Creating and Organizing Icons on the Desktop
- To create a shortcut on the desktop, right-click on a file or program, select Send To, and then choose Desktop (Create Shortcut)
- To close a virtual desktop, click the cross button on the thumbnail in the Task View
Date and Time
- To change the date and time, click on the Windows clock, then click Date & Time Settings
- Turn off the Automatically Set Time button to make the Change button available
- Expand the list of months and select the next month, and modify the day, year, and time values as needed
Notifications
- Notifications can be of different types, including threat detection by Windows Defender, Windows Update updates, or connected devices
File Paths
- A file path is the way to get to a file or folder, and it can be of two types: full or absolute path and relative route.
- A full or absolute path is the path from the drive to the folder or file, e.g.,
C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\root\\Office16\\excel.exe
. - A relative route is the route that depends on where we are located, ignoring the information from the drive to the folder where we are located.
File Explorer
- File Explorer has been redesigned in Windows 10, with a new element called the Ribbon, where commands are concentrated to manage files and programs.
- The Quick Access toolbar is the buttons in the upper-left corner of Explorer windows, allowing customization to add or remove buttons.
Explorer Window
- The Explorer window consists of the File, Folders, and Drives sections.
- Selecting files and folders can be done using the Ribbon.
File Management
- Files and folders can be copied, moved, and renamed using the Ribbon.
- Browser views can be organized, sorted, and files and folders can be recycled.
Opening Multiple Windows
- To open multiple windows, each with the contents of a folder, hover over the folder, right-click, and select "Open in new window".
- Alternatively, go to the File menu, select "Change Folder and Search Options", and choose "Open each folder in different windows".
Quick Access
- The Quick Access section at the top of the File Explorer displays a collection of the most visited folders.
- The Quick Access section changes based on the user's work style and file organization.
View Tab
- The View tab of the Ribbon has a section called Panels, with a Navigation Panel button to disable the Navigation Panel.
- The View tab also allows activation of the Preview panel and the Details panel, which shows the characteristics of the selected file.
Bing SafeSearch Settings
- Enables filtering of adult content, especially useful for families sharing the same computer
Windows 10 Privacy Settings
- Can be accessed through "Other Settings and Privacy Options"
- Allows users to configure privacy options, including location, camera, microphone, and account information

Location Category
- Location is necessary for some apps, such as Weather, to offer a better service
- Users can activate location for their computer and user, and select which apps can or cannot use their location
Camera, Microphone, Account Information, Contacts, Calendars, and Messaging
- Users can decide which apps can use these features
- Can't turn off all features, as some apps require access to function properly (e.g. Windows voice recorder requires microphone access)
Getting to Know You
- Involves ongoing collection of information related to user activities
- Can be turned off by pressing the "Stop Knowing Me" button
- Users can then delete stored information in the cloud through Bing
Contacts Application
- The Contacts application allows users to consult and manage mailing lists and numbers of people registered in various accounts, including Calendar, email accounts, Phone, Skype, and more.
- The application features a search box to facilitate data consultations.
- Users can add new contacts, which will appear in other applications when logged in with a Microsoft account.
Alarms and Clock
- The Alarms and Clock application features a timer, countdown, international clock, and alarm clock.
- The timer is a countdown, useful for tasks such as cooking or working on the computer.
- The stopwatch has an accuracy of up to hundredths of a second.
- The alarm clock requires the device to be turned on to work.
Calculator
- The Calculator is an application for performing mathematical operations and conversions between different units of measurement.
- The standard calculator features basic functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Users can switch to other calculators, such as Scientific or Programmer, and the application will remember their last choice.
- The calculator can also be used for value conversions, including Volume, Length, Weight & Mass, Temperature, Energy, Area, Speed, Time, Power, Data, Pressure, and Angle.
Calendar
- The Calendar application allows users to register and consult appointments and events.
- Days with registered appointments are highlighted in the application.
- Users can register new appointments by clicking on a day and filling out the form.
- Cortana can also be used to register appointments and check the day's agenda.
