Study Notes
Chapter 5: Disassembly and Power
- This chapter covers qualities of a good technician, disassembly and static electricity, tools needed for working on computers, reassembly, power supply basics, and power protection.
Qualities of a Good Technician
- "Soft skills" are essential, meaning communication, documentation, and other interpersonal skills are vital.
Written Communication Skills
- Email: Avoid email when a meeting or phone call is better. Include a clear subject line. Don't write emails when angry. Keep emails to appropriate recipients. Stick to the point. Use a spelling and grammar checker.
- General: Avoid delayed or inaccurate documentation. Improve spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation. Use clear, concise language. Provide updates on problem status.
Disassembly and Electrostatic Discharge
- Disassembly may be necessary to diagnose a problem.
- Remove jewelry.
- Use proper lifting techniques.
- Maintain humidity between 45-55% for ESD.
- Use an anti-static wrist strap, avoiding use on CRT monitors or power supplies.
- Anti-static bags protect parts.
EMI (Electromagnetic Interference)
- EMI/EMR (electromagnetic radiation) noise is caused by electrical devices.
- Many devices generate EMI, including computers, pencil sharpeners, vacuums, air conditioners, and fluorescent lighting.
- RFI (radio frequency interference) is a specific type of EMI that negatively affects computers.
RFI (Radio Frequency Interference)
- RFI occurs in the radio frequency range.
- Check surrounding devices for RFI source, such as a pencil sharpener when the computer only functions with it on.
- Move the computer to a different outlet or circuit if the problem originates from the power source.
- RFI can affect hard drive files.
Tools
- Tools divide into two categories: those needed to leave the office without, and those handy, but not essentials, to have at the office, home, or car.
- Common necessary tools include a variety of screwdriver sizes/types (flathead/Phillips), hex drivers, diagonal cutters, and needle-nose pliers.
Disassembly
- Don't remove the motherboard battery or the CMOS configuration.
- Use proper grounding techniques.
- Keep necessary tools, writing materials, a phone, and a camera near for note-taking, diagramming, and photography.
- Have a clean, flat workspace for assembly.
- Don't stack parts.
- Place removed parts in special ESD protective bags.
Disassembly Notes (continued)
- Handle adapters, motherboards, or processors carefully, avoiding the gold contacts.
- Hard drives need special handling; small jolts can damage stored data.
- Don't disassemble CRT monitors or power supplies without proper training.
- Label screw and cable locations.
Disassembly Basic Steps
- Step 1: Remove Power and External Cables
- Step 2: Open the Case
- Step 3: Remove Internal Cables and Connectors
- Step 4: Remove Adapters
- Step 5: Remove Storage Devices
- Step 6: Remove Motherboard
Reassembly
- Be cautious and use diagrams from disassembly.
- Place parts in proper places.
- Don't forget screws.
- Be sure to use the proper installation procedure reversing the steps used during disassembly.
- Securely seat all parts and replace retaining clips/screws.
Reassembly (continued)
- Ensure ports and I/O shields are securely aligned with the case.
- Ensure cables are securely attached to devices and to the motherboard's connectors.
- Ensure that power cables are correctly attached.
Preventive Maintenance
- Regular (annual) cleaning is necessary.
- Vacuum the computer, optical drive laser, keyboard, and display screen.
- Shut down devices and remove power cords, batteries, and adapters before accessing internal parts.
- Ensure adequate ventilation.
Power Supply
- The power supply is a crucial computer component. Without it, internal devices won't work.
Power Supply Overview
- The power supply converts AC to DC.
- It distributes DC power to components.
- It provides cooling via a fan.
- The AC voltage accepts typically 100-120V or 200-240V.
Power Supply Form Factors
- Power supplies come in different shapes and sizes.
- Today's power supply form factors are ATX, ATX12V v1.x, ATX12V v2.x, and micro-ATX.
- ATX allows transferring voltage to the motherboard.
- ATX12V version 2 has a 24-pin instead of a 20-pin connector.
- Micro-ATX is smaller than full-sized ATX.
- Laptop power supplies are typically proprietary.
ATX Power Supply Connectors
- Connectors include 20/24-pin main power connectors, Molex, 4/8-pin 12V, and 6/8-pin PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).
Auxiliary Fans - Air Flow
- Proper fan positioning is critical to ensure air flow and cooling.
- Two fans opposing each other creates resistance.
Sample Computer Component Power Requirements
- A table listing typical power requirements for various components (motherboard, processor, hard drives, etc.).
Symptoms of Power Supply Problems
- A list of symptoms indicating potential power supply issues.
- Includes the power light not being on, or other issues such as continuous or repeating beeps during startup.
Symptoms of Power Supply Problems (Continued)
- Other symptoms include a burnt smell, excessive heat, or no operation from other devices.
- Error codes during POST (Power On Self Test) can result from power errors.
Power Protection
- Computers require a regulated AC supply converted to DC power.
- Protection includes surge suppressors to prevent voltage spikes.
- Line conditioners regulate the AC voltage.
- UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) provide protection during outages and voltage control.
- SPS (Surge Protection Supplies) typically provides power during an outage.
Computer Terms
- Review the glossary for defined computer terms used in Chapter 5.
