Study Notes

Computer Components

  • A computer is an electronic device that manipulates data, following instructions stored in its memory. It accepts input, processes data, produces output, and stores data.
  • Computers consist of two main components: hardware and software.

Hardware

  • Hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer.
  • Five general categories of hardware: Central Processing Unit (CPU), Input Devices, Output Devices, Memory, and Storage Devices.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

  • The CPU is the "brain" of the computer, controlling how other parts function.
  • It's assisted by the Control Unit (CU) and the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU).
  • The Control Unit interprets and executes instructions from software.
  • It controls data flow between the CPU and other devices.
  • The Arithmetic Logic Unit performs calculations, comparisons, and other operations. (e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, comparisons)

Motherboard

  • The motherboard is a circuit board connecting the CPU, memory, and other hardware.
  • The CPU resides on the motherboard (also called the logic board).
  • Buses are circuits on the motherboard connecting the CPU to other components.

Input Devices

  • Input devices allow data entry into the computer.
  • Examples include a mouse. (other examples like keyboard, scanner, etc.)

Output Devices

  • Output devices display or transmit processed information from the computer.
  • Examples include speakers. (other examples like monitor, printer, etc)

Memory

  • Memory temporarily stores instructions and data for the computer
  • Main Memory is located on the computer's main circuit board, enabling fast data transfer to and from the CPU

Storage Devices

  • Storage devices store data permanently.
  • Some storage devices can read data (like CD drives).
  • Others allow saving and retrieving data (e.g., hard disk drives).

Peripheral Devices

  • Peripheral devices are external devices controlled by the CPU.
  • Examples include CD-ROMs, floppy disks, keyboards, mice, printers, and scanners.
  • Peripheral devices are not essential for the computer to function.

Software

  • Software is the collection of computer programs that instruct the computer. It's essential for hardware to function.
  • Types of software: Computer Programs, System Software, and Application Software

System Software

  • System software (often the operating system) controls hardware and software interaction.
  • The most common operating system is Windows.
  • The Operating System is the first program loaded into memory during startup.

Application Software

  • Application software performs specific tasks, like spreadsheets, word processors, and databases.

Computer Programs

  • Computer programs are created by programmers to build system and application software.
