Study Notes
System Unit
- The system unit is the case that houses the electronic components of a computer.
- It includes:
- Drive bays
- Power supply
- Sound card
- Video card
- Processor (CPU)
- Memory
Motherboard
- The motherboard is the main circuit board of the system unit.
- It contains integrated circuits.
Processor (CPU)
- The processor, also called the Central Processing Unit (CPU), interprets and executes the basic instructions of a computer.
- It contains:
- Control unit
- Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)
- Multi-core, dual-core, and quad-core processors exist.
- The control unit directs and coordinates most of the operations in the computer.
- The ALU performs arithmetic, comparison, and other operations.
Machine Cycle
- For every instruction, a processor repeats four basic operations:
- Fetch
- Decode
- Execute
- Store
Pipelining
- Allows the processor to begin fetching a second instruction before completing the machine cycle for the first instruction.
Registers
- The processor uses registers to temporarily hold data and instructions.
System Clock
- Controls the timing of all computer operations.
- Clock speed is measured in gigahertz (GHz).
Processor Manufacturers
- Leading manufacturers of personal computer processor chips include Intel and AMD.
Processor Cooling
- Processor chips generate heat.
- Cooling systems are required to prevent overheating:
- Heat sinks
- Liquid cooling technology
