Study Notes
Components of Computer-Based Information System (CBIS)
- CBIS consists of hardware, software, databases, telecommunications, people, and procedures.
Hardware
- Consists of computer equipment used to perform input, processing, storage, and output activities.
- Trend in the computer industry is to produce smaller, faster, and more mobile hardware.
- Input devices include keyboards, mouse, pointing devices, and equipment that can read magnetic ink characters.
Software
- A program or collection of programs that enable the hardware to process data.
- Examples include Microsoft Windows (system software) and Microsoft Office (application software).
Database
- A collection of related files or tables containing data.
- An organized collection of facts and information, typically consisting of two or more related data files.
Telecommunications
- The electronic transmission of signals or communications.
- Includes wired, wireless, and satellite transmissions.
Networks
- Connect computers and equipment to enable electronic communications.
- Permit different computers to share resources.
- Examples include intranet (internal network) and extranet (network that allows selected outsiders to access authorized resources).
Internet
- The world’s largest computer network, consisting of thousands of interconnected networks.
- All networks freely exchange information.
People
- The most important element in most CBIS because they make the difference between success and failure for most organizations.
- IS personnel include those who manage, run, and maintain the system, including the chief information officer.
Procedure
- Strategies, policies, methods, and rules for using the CBIS.
- Includes operation, maintenance, and security of the computer.
- Procedures are the instructions for combining CBIS components to process information and generate desired output.
Information System
- A set of interrelated elements or components that input, process, store, and disseminate data and information.
- Provides a corrective reaction (feedback mechanism) to meet an objective that can be manual or computerized.
Information System Components
- Input: gathering and capturing raw data.
- Processing: converting or transforming data into useful outputs.
- Output: producing useful information.
- Feedback: information from the system used to make changes to input or processing activities.
