Communication Process
- Source/Sender: The originator of a message; can be a person, group, or machine. They have a specific intent.
- Encoding: Converting thoughts/ideas into a code or language others can understand. This includes choosing specific words, symbols, or formatting for the message.
- Message: The encoded thoughts, ideas, or information the sender wants to convey. This includes verbal, nonverbal, written, or visual elements.
- Channel: The medium used to send the message, such as verbal communication, written documents, emails, social media, body language, SMS, etc.
- Receiver: The individual or group intended to receive the message. Can be a person, or a machine.
- Decoding: Interpreting the message to determine the sender's intent.
Noise
- External Noise: Distractions like loud noises, poor reception, etc. that interfere with the message.
- Internal Noise: Emotional factors (preconceptions, emotional states) that hinder understanding.
- Semantic Noise: Misinterpretation of the message due to differences in how the sender and receiver interpret symbols or words.
Feedback
- Feedback: The receiver's response to the message, confirming understanding or misunderstanding. This can be a reply, action, nod, etc.
Context
- Context: The environment surrounding the communication. Physical, social, chronological, and cultural factors impact how the message is interpreted, encoded, and transmitted.
Communication Elements
- Effective Communication: Occurs when the intended message is accurately decoded and understood by the intended receiver. Poor encoding, communication channels, or decoding can hinder communication.
- Communication Process Visualization: A continuous loop where sender transmits message, receiver decodes, provides feedback, which in turn influences the sender.
