- Communication is the exchange of ideas, information, thoughts, and feelings.
- Communication is a process involving a sender, encoding, message, decoding, receiver, feedback, and noise.
Communication Types

Verbal Communication:
- Messages are transmitted verbally, either by spoken words or writing.
- Formal verbal communication often uses the acronym KISS (Keep It Short and Simple).
- Divided into oral and written communication.

Oral Communication:
- Uses spoken words.
- Includes face-to-face communication, speeches, phone calls, video calls, and more.
- Influenced by tone, pitch, volume, speed, and clarity.
- Advantages: Quick feedback.
- Disadvantages: Limited time for thought and processing.

Written Communication:
- Uses written signs or symbols.
- Can be transmitted via email, letters, reports, memos, etc.
- Frequently used in business settings.
- Advantages: Editing, revision, record keeping, detailed understanding, enabling receiver to respond appropriately.
- Disadvantages: Delayed Feedback, composing messages takes more time , and some people lack the ability to write.

Nonverbal Communication:
- Wordless messages are sent.
- Include gestures, body language, posture, tone of voice, facial expressions.
- Contains four elements: Appearance (clothing, hairstyle), Surroundings (room size, lighting), Body language (gestures, expressions), and Sounds (speech patterns, tone, volume).
Levels of Communication
- Intrapersonal: Communication within oneself, involves thoughts, biases, prejudices, feelings, and decision-making
- Interpersonal: Communication between two people, like conversations between friends or interviews.
- Small Group: Communication within teams or groups, focused on problem-solving, decision-making, and group discussion.
- One-to-Group: A single speaker communicating to a larger audience (ex. teacher with students).
- Mass: Electronic or print transmission of messages to a large audience, like commercials, media, etc.; feedback is delayed.
Communication Barriers
- Physical: Obstructions blocking the message.
- Perceptual: How individuals interpret the message varies.
- Emotional: Emotions, feelings, stress, and mood of receiver.
- Cultural: Differences in backgrounds and beliefs.
- Language: Differences in languages or lack of understanding.
- Gender: Differences in perceptions associated with genders within different groups.
- Interpersonal: Conflicts or issues between people.
Effective Communication Strategies
- Take the receiver seriously.
- Understand the audience.
